Whoa!!!!Grey TuEsday!!!!Horror DaY!!!Say wat u want for 7/26!!!The Fact remains tht it was 1 of Mumbai's 'blackest' day(in the literal sense)...
So wat this post is abt...Obviosly my experience of the DAY...I was chatting away in the safe havens of my office, oblivios to the terror unleashin outside...My frend warns me to leave office early cos its really rainin hard....I say ...wen my PM allows to leave ,onli thn will I leave...(so mch for dedication to my wrk)...The PM is bsy in a meeting.....I go out and chk the conditions,Man!!!was it misty/rainy/foggy!!!!U betcha!Mobile coverage dwindling already!!!
An office colleague stayin around my place tells tht v hafta leave soon cos my area already haf-submerged!!!Am still not reeling under shock...everything is calm(in my head, tht is!)...So takin God's name, out we step !!!!
A whirling wind catches us!!!!Umbrellas topy turvy...still we march on.Wading thru ankle-deep,then knee-deep,then waist deep...Then Chest Deep ...Thn Neck -deep......Damn this MIDC/Chakala area...I was like Now am Goin dwn under.....Trust Bombayites to keep the humor alive in such trying times...'Ganpati bappa morya....'....i smile...not knowing the harrowing times yet to face!!!!
We wade on...reach Andheri stn east..Cross the bridge to the west....so many ppl on the bridge....try 2 reach my place wich is around 10 mins from the Station....but no!!!!Nature has other plans...I am 5 mins from my place in a lane..jus hafta cross the Main road...but no,...Now I kno wat it means 'so Close yert so far'.... the water in full force flowin..I could see a palm tree half submerged in the water..so well cud gauge the force/power of flowin H2O.....
Saw an abandoned rick...sta in it for 2 hrs to beat the rains...tryin frantically to reach family/frenz...Damn These Mobile opertaors...wats the use of havin a cell if it cant be used in times of distress?phew!!!then wandered around..some females with me...A gentleman offered his place, gave us shelter,food.. a place to sleep ...GOD BLESS HIM & HIS FAMILY!!!!!!mobilesstill down....Man...It felt like the longest nite of my life....Finally the rains abted around 5 ish...Then walked home to see the mass destruction it had caused...Filth & muck everywhere..dead animals/corpses....Vehicles turned turtle......Returned home with an aching body :(
Amidst alll this, one thing tht shone thru...was the helpful nature of the City's ppl...everywhere volunteers stood, baring the torrent to guide ppl thru..to help out ladies & kids...to supply food/water to stranded passengers....
Its truly bcos of this tht the city is called 'with a heart of gold'...Kudos to all the folks who helped any/every one in distress....Kudos to The spirit of MUMBAI!!!!This city can bounce back form anything!!!!!Proud to be a BOMBAYITE!!!!
